Research Areas:
Dr. Morrell’s work explores uses of language and texts across a variety of sociocultural contexts paying close attention to the relationships between language, literacy, culture and power in society. He also examines interventions designed to facilitate literacies of power and freedom and investigates strategies for developing effective literacy educators in urban contexts. Morrell directs an annual Critical Research and Writing Seminar for urban teen, teachers and parents in the Los Angeles area. Ernest developed the module on Promoting Student Achievement in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Classrooms for the ASSIST project. Morrell taught high school English for eight years and, for the past six years, he has directed a summer research seminar for adolescents in urban Los Angeles.
