Research Areas:
Jay Gillen has been the adult facilitator for the Baltimore Algebra Project since 2001. His work includes supporting students who run a student-directed after-school math tutoring business. The business employs 150 young people and has put over $500,000 in students' pockets during the past three years, most from service contracts with public schools. Jay also supports student challenges to the state's inadequate funding of public education and the city's inadequate curriculum. In this work, Jay explores the role of Math Literacy Organizer, an extension of Robert Moses' ideas for math education in the 21st century. In 1994 Jay co-founded the Stadium School, a community-based, parent-teacher controlled public middle school. The Stadium School serves many purposes, including as an organizing base for the Algebra Project work.
