Shari Werner - Malgieri

Shari Werner-Malgieri has been teaching for 14 years and has spent six of those years in the Boston Public Schools. Currently Shari teaches at the Orchard Gardens Pilot School in Roxbury, Massachusetts where she is one of the few remaining founding teachers. Shari continues to teach visual arts to middle school students, runs an advanced art program for eager students who wish to sharpen their skills, and teaches ARTS Inclusive, a program in which she works collaboratively with other K-8 teachers who desire to enrich their curriculum with more creative, hands-on experiential learning techniques for their students.

She has also developed, published and shared a thematic whole school arts curriculum map which supports K-8 specialists serving students in all arts disciplines. Shari is the arts team leader for the school and has chaired and organized numerous after school productions and events for both parents and the community to enjoy. She researches local arts opportunities in and around Boston and encourages students to participate in them after-school, on weekends and during holidays. Shari is an active member of the whole school improvement plan committee, the instructional leadership committee, and has served on the educators’ advisory committee for the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.


Activities & Honors:
Shari’s students’ work has been featured in local café galleries, at the Boston Convention Center, and on the walls of Boston’s City Hall. Her students have also won writing competitions and the ACT Roxbury Literary Annual has included their written artwork and poetry in its pages. For the past four years, numerous individuals have recognized Shari and her students, including Dr. Carol Johnson, superintendent of Boston Public Schools.

Her students have earned a total of almost $15,000 in scholarship awards that they will apply toward furthering their education after high school. Shari’s students also earned monetary certificates for their artistic talent at the annual Dr. Martin Luther King memorial breakfast alongside other honored guests such as Mayor Thomas Menino, former governor Mitt Romney, and Governor Deval Patrick in 2006. Shari is currently illustrating her own children’s book.
